Balacanché Caves

About the Site

In 1959 a passageway was discovered leading to a series of caves in which the ancient Mayas had left offerings to their god Tizimín.  There are a series of caves with stalactites and stalagmites, an underground pool and many Maya offerings.  The walk takes about 20 minutes to get to the end of the series of caves.   There is a Spanish or English narrative along the path, depending which tour you take.  Although the caves are lit, it can be dark and claustrophobic.  Also, the ventilation is rather poor, and towards the end of the day after visits by many tourists, the air can be very hot and stale with a lot of carbon dioxide.  The last English tour starts at 3 p.m.

How We Got There

We visited this site after  Chichén-Itzá, driving the short distance from our base hotel, the Pirámide Inn, in Pisté.   Go about 4 miles from Pisté towards Cancún on Route 180, and turn left at the sign onto a short gravel road.
