Becan Site

Becán Archeological Site

About the Site

This site was once surrounded by a moat, remnants of which can still be seen.  It was occupied from about 600 B.C. to 1200 A.D.  It was a government and ceremonial center which controlled other nearby cites including Chicanná. The site is somewhat subtle and complex, and to really study it, a guide is suggested.

How We Got There

We stayed at the Ramada Inn across the road from Chicanná the night before and then toured the easily accessible sites near Xpujil on our way to Chetumal along Highway 186.

This was the plaza which was the center of all grand ceremonies and was visible from long distances.
This covered Maya archway connects from the grand plaza to other ruins on the site.   It was used as a common thoroughfare, and had niches along its walls, presumably for placement of statues.
A strange mushroom growing on the site.
