MayapánWe drove from Ticul along Highway 18 (25 miles) to get to the site which is alongside the highway.
We stayed at a nice and clean moderate hotel, the Hotel Plaza in the center of town.
This site is a late site, founded about 1007 A.D. At one time it was as important as Chichén Itza and Uxmal, being the capital of a Maya confederation which included those cities. Before 1200 AD, Mayapán defeated both Chichén Itza and Uxmal, but a revolt in the mid 1400s caused the city to be abandoned. It once had more than 3,000 buildings.
The site is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking is free. Entry is free on Sundays.
