Tulúm Archeological Site

Where We Stayed

We based ourselves at the Villas de Caribe near Akumal, which was within 25 miles of this site.

About the Site

The site was erected after 900 AD, and served as a seaport for Maya traders.  It was visible to Spanish galleons sailing the Caribbean.  It is a small site, but heavily visited since it is close to Cancún.   Due to the heavy traffic, access to each of the buildings on the site is severely restricted.  Although it occupies one of the most beautiful seaside locations, it has become very commercialized, with a tram from the parking lot, an on-site market with craft stalls, performances by professional groups, and expensive food and drink.  If you visit only this site, you will probably  miss discovering the real spirit of the Maya, which is so much more evident at the other sites.

El Castillo - is the most impressive structure on the site, sitting on the cliff above the Caribbean.  In front of it is the Temple of the Frescos which has some wall paintings.
A distinctive feature of this site is the seaside location and the non-perpendicular construction of this building.
