Addictive Music

from Kevin's collection

EARWORM ALERT ! !

What is an "Addictive" song?

I call a song "addictive" when I can't listen to the rest of the album without clicking back to hear the song again, three - four - five times, one after another.  I like a lot of variety in my music, but an addictive song makes me want to play it over and over again, many times right in a row.  It's "catchy," but catchy on steroids.

Different people will, of course, find different songs "addictive", or not.  (Every person has a different harmonic vibrational frequency.)  But an addictive song should, hopefully, retain its power of addiction long after the music itself goes out of style.  Sure lots of people want to hear the latest bubblegum pop hit over and over again.  But what I'm talking about is, 20 years later many people will still smile and shake to the Romantics "What I Like About You" or "Stray Cat Strut" when it comes on the radio, even though they'd be mortally embarrassed to be caught with a Romantics or Stray Cats album on their shelf.  (Or, say, a Romantics or Stray Cats hairstyle!)  The addictiveness gives these songs some potential to be "timeless classics", but then again, not all "timeless classics" are addictive.

An "addictive" song is not necessarily well-crafted, nor inventive... (the Ramones wrote many addictive songs using only three chords)...  nor of course does it necessarily have much melody or artistry...  it taps into something primal.  A well-crafted song can be addictive, but not necessarily the reverse.  Lyrics alone can make a song addictive (see King Missile's "How To Remember Your Dreams"), but the lyrics don't necessarily have to be deep or meaningful (as for example, the #1 song on my list.  Or R.E.M.'s entire career).

Being "Addictive" has some relation to being an "Earworm".  The difference is, that "earworm" has a somewhat negative connotation: a tune which you wish you could get out of your head, but can't.  When I hear one of these "addictive" tunes, I don't want to get it out of my head.  When these songs are playing, I am 'Rockin' Out' -- even if only silently, internally (so that people on the bus don't stare at me with my earphones).
Rockin' Out

Here are the top 100 most addictive songs from my music library, roughly in order from least to most addictive.

Considering that my library includes over 21,000 songs, the top 100 are pretty addictive.
Sorry, I don't have enough bandwidth to put up music samples for all 100 songs.  Even though I'm relying on Amazon for a lot of music samples, some of the more obscure songs are not on Amazon, and I don't feel like editing and posting the whole collection, due to bandwith.  I'll put up samples of the most addictive songs (rare/obscure ones from my own collection) when we get later on down the list.
(It's often tough to tell if a song is really, truly that much more addictive than its neighbor on the list... so they're grouped by fives and tens instead of giving each one a definite number.  Ask me again on a different day and the order would probably be different anyway.)
(Quick rule: I decided that any given group could only have one song in the top 100.  It would be the single one most addictive song in their repertoire.  On the other hand, I decided that groups which broke up but their members formed other groups {such as Sublime vs. Long Beach Dub Allstars, or Clash vs. Joe Strummer} could each have separate songs in the top 100, if they deserved it.)
(If you don't usually play music clips through your web browser, you might want to make sure your browser and QuickTime(TM), or whatever program serves as your web media player, have the latest updates.  It's a pain in the @$$ when your browser tries to update your media player in the middle of playing a song.  Also, clean out your Internet cache afterwards, if you know how to do that.  Listening to media leaves large temporary trash files behind.)

The Verve

The Verve -- "Bittersweet Symphony" (from the album Urban Hymns)
Genre:  Alternative

This song got a lot of radio play in the late 90s.  The combination of orchestra with rock defines several of the songs on this list, and has a long history going back at least as far as the Beatles.  When done right, I feel like this combination lends the song a sort-of sweeping grandiosity, a sense of importance, which helps the song become "addictive".

Tryin' to make ends meet, you're a slave to the money -- then you die!

INXS -- "This Time" (J.D. Fortune's performance from the TV series Rockstar INXS)
Genre:  Rock

Rockstar INXS
Sorry, I don't have enough bandwidth to put up music samples for all 100 songs.
The original INXS version of this song is fairly addictive, with a smooth, easy chorus and an uplifting melody.  However, I was moved by J.D. Fortune's performance on the game show, where he used the song to apologize to his fellow contestants for being kind-of a brat.  I think the band (INXS) was impressed to, as J.D. Fortune went on to win the contest...

We are always wanting the things we cannot find
You know that we are only wasting time...
We are hoping, yes, and we're praying
This time will be the last time that we will fight like this !

Violent Femmes

Violent Femmes -- "Kiss Off" (from the album Permanent Record: The Very Best of the Violent Femmes)
Genre:  Alternative / Punk

The Violent Femmes somehow have a knack for crossing genres and crossing eras; this song still plays on alternative radio whenever the mood strikes the DJ.

You can all just kiss off into the air -- behind my back, I can feel them stare...
They hurt me bad, but I don't mind -- they hurt me bad, but they do it all the time!

b.d. katz -- "Clarita" (unreleased web demo)
Genre:  Avantgarde
b.d. katz
Sorry, I don't have enough bandwidth to put up music samples for all the songs.
Brian's song "Unconditional" is probably more addictive than "Clarita", but I recently highlighted "Unconditional" when I published my previous music commentary, "What I Missed About the USA".  So, to prove Brian isn't a one-hit wonder (like many of the groups on this list!), I'm going to point up a different song of his.

Clarita swims in darkness  // thru oceans in the night
thru waves all glowing turquoise // when the red tide shows its might
there's a sun that's green and yellow;  // it's a brief and gentle sight.
let it sink beneath the turtle's back...  !

Brando -- "Down" (from the album 8-Track Demo)
Genre:  Alternative

This is a morose, haunting song from a local group in the San Francisco Bay Area during the mid-90s.  I saw them open for Stroke 9 in a high school theatre.

What if the Earth were flat, and all us prisoners could walk from the edge?
No fear of heights, we'd fall until starvation land...

Here are some "Honorable Mentions" -- songs that I would rank somewhere in the low 100s on the Addictive rating scale.
  • Santana - "She's Not There"
  • Eros Ramazzotti & Tazenda - "Domo Mia"  (Thanks Paul!)
  • Makana - "New Love Song"
  • Kai Winding - "MORE!!"
  • Bedhead Blonde - "You Want a Remedy?"
  • Ben Harper - "Forgiven"
  • Jonathon Coulton - "Code Monkey"
  • Sir Mix-A-Lot - "Baby's Got Back"
  • Motel Motel - "Coffee"

NOFX -- "The Cause" (from the album Punk in Drublic)
Genre:  Punk
NOFX songs are always a double-edged sword.  There's always another side to them.  I thought this song was a great motivational song for political activism, for about a year or so, until I realized the whole thing is a satire!

No, it isn't for the fortune // No it isn't for the fame,
It's a scheme, a dream, a barterine // We want everyone to think the same!
Because you know what you know is right // And you feel what you can't ignore
And you try so hard to point the blame // A shame, what are we doin' this for?
The cause, we're just doin' it for the cause !

Genre:  Alternative / Vocal

Bridget Joyce
Many people who listen to Bridget Joyce's songs find themselves repeating her lyrics softly to themselves, simply in a pale effort to recapture her haunting, crooning voice.  Kudos to my friend Pete for bringing this artist to my collection.

When I was a little girl, my momma told me, 'Don't give it all away'
When I was a little girl, my daddy told me, 'You'll be beautiful someday'
But I never really got it straight...
...and in all my dreams, I'm not so ugly...

Blind Melon
Blind Melon -- "No Rain" (from the album Blind Melon)
Genre:  Alternative
This song probably needs no introduction;  it was heavily over-played during much of the 90s, and can probably still be heard on alternative rock stations occasionally.

And I don't understand why I sleep all day
And I start to complain that there's no rain
And all I can do is read a book to stay awake
It rips my life away but it's a great escape...

Genre:  Avantgarde / Comedy

Trust me, you have to hear this song to believe it.  It contains dozens of bad puns comparing love to cars, and the chorus is the funniest of all.

In my rear-view mirror, you're closer than you seem!  // There's yellow lines on either side, and you and me between.
I'm filled-up with this feeling, as I unlock the door...  //  I don't know if it's gas, or if it's love!

Blue Öyster Cult -- "Burnin' for You" (from the album Fire of Unknown Origin)
Genre:  Rock
If this song is familiar to you, then you're in my age group for sure.  It almost approaches the Beatles in the 'aeolian cadences' of its vocals.  Combine that with a simple, solid song structure and some awesome guitars, and you've got an addictive song.

I'm livn' for givin' the Devil his due!  And I'm burnin', I'm burnin', I'm burnin' for you...

Fryday Band -- "Shelter" (from live website demos 2004)
Genre:  Acoustic / Alternative

Another rather addictive song, "Skylines and Smiles", was popular among this band's undeservedly small following.  But the San Diego-based Fryday Band always brought audiences onto the dance floor with this song, particularly because of Bahman's soaring fiddle part here.  The song was also a great showcase for Jamie's intimate style of singing.
For where I want to go --
No more confusion, I don't want it anymore... It's wracking my brain!
You capture all that I am... [you scare me, that's why I act the way I do]
You capture all that I am... and now I want to capture all of you...

Paul Westerberg -- "Black-Eyed Susan" (from the album 14 Songs)
Genre:  Alternative
This song was all over the radio when I was living in Hawaii in the early 90s.  Something about its simplicity is just really listenable, in a casual way.  Not grabs-you-by-the-throat addictive, just something you wouldn't mind playing in the background time and time again.
Still throwing small shadows, catch those that fall at my feet...  Black-eyed Susan dancing in the breeze!

By far the most hilarious song from the whole opus of a group that specializes in punk comedy.  And like many punk songs, it contains a subtle political point: why do women get the blame for so much stupid sh#t that men basically do to themselves?
To top it all off, how many songs can boast lyrics like:
"You don't mind if I leave the needle in while I prepare the cortisone, do you?"

I often wonder how bands feel when they're starting out and basically at the bottom of the food chain.  The venue, the radio stations, the promoters, the label, the distributors -- all seem to get their cut before the actual "talent".  I suspect this song is a glimpse of it.

Waterboys -- "When Ye Go Away" (from the album Fisherman's Blues)
Genre:  Celtic
Mike Scott of the Waterboys is somehow adept at understanding what made traditional songs last for centuries, and then taking that and putting it in a slightly more modern context.  Traditional songs survived for so long because they were, are, in a sense, addictive.

Your coat is made of magic, and around your table angels play...  //  And I will cry, when ye go away.  I will cry, when ye go away...
You ain't callin' me to join ya, and I'm spoken-for, anyway...  //  I will cry, when ye go away.  I will cry, when ye go away...

Genre:  Hawaiian

Sprung Monkey
Sorry, I don't have enough bandwidth to put up music samples for all the songs.  The clip from Amazon is only the tail-end note.
San Diego favorites Sprung Monkey put out several very addictive alt-rock albums... (the song "What's That You Say?" from Get A Taste almost displaced this song here)... but the delight of discovering this beautiful song in the traditional Hawaiian style as the "secret song" from one of their early disks, really spoke a lot about their versatility and inventiveness.

And with the grace of her hands, she can tell you that a star only glitters
At the setting of the sunset!

Jimi Hendrix -- "All Along the Watchtower" (from the album Experience Hendrix: the Best of Jimi Hendrix)
Genre:  Classic Rock
Of course this is a Dylan cover, not a Hendrix original, but it is surely among the most famous cover versions of any song anywhere.  There shouldn't be any doubt why...  I'm rather embarrassed that Bob Dylan didn't personally make it into my top 100 Addictive, but I'm throwing Dylan some props in another venue.
(For variety, though, be sure to check out the trippy Battlestar Galactica cover version of this song)...

So let us not talk falsely now, the hour's getting late...

This is a truly weird band, but I mean that in the best sort of way.  They're a bit like R.E.M., in that their lyrics are either dreamy or drug-induced; but I think these guys rock harder than R.E.M.
Oh, this time I really trust you
But it can't belong to anyone
And I'd be so sad if I lost it

Her Majesty the Baby -- "Fendaya" (from the album Noisy Neighbors Live 105.3)
Genre:  Alternative

Sorry, I don't have enough bandwidth to put up music samples for all the songs.
This San Francisco group earned some local fame with their beautiful crooning vocals.  The nonsense chorus lyrics here are really endearing.
Fendia, fendoa, fendaya, fenducco, fenduzi, fenupo, fendow...

The Dead Kennedys' lyrics are really pure poetry, in a horrific sort of way.  For years, whenever I finished with job interviews, after wearing a suit and tie and pretending to be all bushy-tailed and gung-ho about participating in the Capitalist exploitation machine, I would feel a deep need to put on the "Kill the Poor" at high volume the minute I got out of the building and into my car.
This song is also still very useful to quietly imagine as the background music -- whenever anyone from Fox News is talking about the economy...
Efficiency and progress is ours once more, now that we have the Neutron Bomb,
It's nice and quick and clean and gets things done
!

Gruntruck -- "Tribe" (from the album Best of Grunge Rock)
Genre:  Alternative Rock

Some might say that Sting's post-Police work is rather schmaltzy and saccharine.  Some might say that about this song.  But it was a highlight of a rather dry year, musically, and it still packs some punch today, lyrically and musically.

Had to stop in my tracks for fear, of walking on the mines I'd laid...

All alone, on the floor, next to your twin-bed box-spring and mattress,  //  The door is ajar from afar you can hear bands practicing
And when they dream they all dream of somebody like you,  //  Somebody who takes what they make twice as seriously as they could ever hope to do
And when you dream you dream of a day...  //  When you find something you could love half as much as you love all your little round mirrors
See yourself reflected in one, there's a hole in the middle you can't seem to fill...
And you cry, then you lie your frail body down like a penny on a railroad track...  //  But every time you crash a little bit harder than the last...

Genre: Rock
The first few Police albums had several addictive songs -- most people would probably put "Roxanne" on this list instead of the instrumental I've chosen here.  But on this one you can hear some of the calypso-type influences that contributed to the group's unique sound.  The melody is simply picturesque, very descriptive, it conjures images.

Another one-hit wonder from the 90s... Something about the grinding rhythm combines well with the falsetto crooning.

Ah-wooo, got you where I want you!

I picked up this song from a free college-campus alt-music sampler and always liked it.  I should investigate this group some more...  the frenzied urgency of the singer's voice drives this song.
I could wait to catch a wave if I wanted to be saved, ride the southwest wind to shore -
I could walk the golden mile with a sorry sort of smile or dig my heels in the ocean floor -
Though I may have lost some strength I could have shown my face again but I've made this place my home -
And you've broken me in two and I just don't know what I'd do and I'm much safer here on my own...
So long - I'm gone!
So long - I'm gone!

Beck -- "Loser" (from the album Mellow Gold)
Genre: Alternative
Here's another song that couldn't possibly be avoided in a list of addictive songs.  This was the chart-topping hit that introduced Beck's "goofy white-boy rap" (as one reviewer put it) to the mainstream.
Forces of evil in a bozo nightmare banned all the music with a phony gas chamber 'cuz one's got a weasel and the other's got a flag one's got on the pole shove the other in a bag with the rerun shows and the cocaine nose job the daytime crap with the folksinger slop he hung himself with a guitar string slap the turkey neck and it's hangin' on a pigeon wing you can't write if you can't relate trade the cash for the beef for the body for the hate and my time is a piece of wax fallin' on a termite who's chokin' on the splinters --

Challengers
Challengers -- "The Streets of London" (from the album The Man from U.N.C.L.E.)
Genre:  Surf
I couldn't find an audio clip in the public domain for this one, but you can hear the excellent album title track here.  Something about the final wordless wail on this particular song, however, is spellbinding.
The streets of London are empty  //  the fog leaves wanton desire
Your body, it may be cold, boy  //  but soon your soul will be fire...!

I wish this catchy tune would lose its political relevance at some point.  But unfortunately, even with a new Administration in office, little has changed:
From the force to the union shops, The war economy is making new jobs!
But the people who benefit most, Are breaking bread with their benevolent host...
Who never stole from the rich to give to the poor -- All he ever gave to them was a war!
And a foreign enemy to deplore...
Let them eat war!  Let them eat war!
That's how to ration the poor!
Let them eat war!  Let them eat war,
There's an urgent need to feed... Declining pride

Damned -- "Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde" (from the album The Black Album)
Genre:  Punk
Classic first-wave Britpunks the Damned show off their literary roots with this evocative ballad.  Listen to it at soft volume on a foggy night and see if you don't look over your shoulder a bit.
I'm normal outside, he's evil inside -- I'm Dr. Jeckyll, he's Mr. Hide.
I want what's right -- he works in the night...
Searching for sin in this decadent light...
My charms will beguile you
And my arms will defile you !

I gave this young singer some flak about writing the lyric "...feeling 1965"  (I wasn't even born in 1965, and I'm ancient) -- but I regret it -- he pulls it off well and the rest of the song is very catchy!
Woke up this morning feeling 1965, there was lovin' on my mind ! ...

Baby I need your lovin', got to, got to have it all this morning

Stroke 9 -- "Set You Free" (from the album All In)
Genre:  Alternative
Bay Area favorites Stroke 9 clock in with this anthemic declaration of freedom.  I love the way they use an entire orchestra to basically perform a guitar riff.  I don't think it's possible to listen to this song without tappin' your foot or shakin' just a little.
And it's all because of me -- I'll set you free !
I know how your face looks when you're down !
You won't have me with you, so you just rage
You put your faith in this life, set you free !
I want you to believe in me -- so that I can believe in you...

I hope I never forget the first time I heard Slightly Stoopid roll out this instrumental at the House of Blues in L.A. -- my jaw just dropped and tears came to my eyes.  These guys are more musically adventurous than many people give them credit for: if you're a fan of real classical guitar, or just rock, this ought to appeal to you.  As Miles says, "It all comes down to tuning!  It's a beautiful thing."

Genre:  Punk / Reggae
This is just a fun song.  Especially -- but not limited to -- if you've spent time in Hawai'i, you've probably met the sort of person who would more easily believe that his girlfriend has a facial disease than the idea that she's fallen out of love with him.  The tune is also legitimately addictive.
You know I really had to use my sense and my eyes,
Slammed the door right in your face -- how's it feel?  How's it taste?
Look how you won't dance with me
Has December made you so mean that you're looking so far past me?
Just say what you say, don't run away, my tongue's so tired from putting out the fire
-- that I --
Started in the first place...
What's wrong with your face ?  You never smile anymore,
What's wrong with your face ?  You never close your eyes, when I kiss your face...

Happy Chichester & Howlin' Maggie
Another song that I'll never forget the first time I heard it, at the Belly-Up Bar in Solana Beach.  Unfortunately the lyrics hit home to me more than I should probably admit in public.  Also, "Nobody Calls Her Baby" and "If I Could Murder the Right Man" (from the same album) are notably addictive.
We live in such a love-sick world, all the lonely boys and girls
So often feel they have to choose between a lover and a latitude!
Some people hang their heads and cry, some may even want to die...
Hey why you leavin' here so soon?  Could I tell you something you could use...
But as soon as I open wide it seems like my tongue is tied
And we wouldn't be satisfied with their bitter chorus...
And I know, anything's possible, if we believe it so
I'm not too proud to say --
Love is all around us !
Love is all around us !
Love is all around us !
Love is all around us !

From the Smashing Pumpkins first mainstream album, here's another one that the majority of listeners would put on a list of very addictive songs.  Again the combination of orchestra with rock band lends drama and weight to the song.
Disarm you with a smile, cut you like you want me to
Cut the little child inside of me that's such a part of you...
I used to be a little boy
[So old in my shoes]
What I choose is my vhoice
[What's a boy supposed to do]

I send this smile over to you...
The killer in me is the killer in you!

The Keeners
Keeners -- "Bowie on the Stereo" (from the album Landscapes)
Genre:  Alternative
I couldn't find an audio clip in the public domain for this one, but I recommend you sample what I think is their 2nd-most-addictive song, "Settle," from the same album, here.  Back to "Bowie on the Stereo," however, the late-stage Keeners skillfully blended grinding rock with delicate melodies and male and female vocals to achieve some stunningly original rock.
Fate surrounds me, disappointing me, metaphors and lies
I lie awakened by your image in my mind
Are you the writer of the story of my life ?
At home with Bowie on my stereo --
It's a painful rite of separation
No more words of conversation
I hear nothing but a sweet lullaby...

There are many, many addictive songs in the Hoodoo Gurus' catalogue -- which is why they tend to make a good soundtrack for sports type of activities, like snowboarding (or on the soundtracks of several surf movies).  They do this with merciless guitar hooks that can catch pretty much anybody who enjoys energetic rock.
My edge is keen and I hone my skills, got nerves of steel and an iron will
My skin is bronzed, my trim is chrome, climb aboard - I'll drive you home.
I'm a silver-tongued devil with a heart of gold,

Genre:  Rock
This uplifting song was written about transcendental meditation.  Also give a listen to "Livin' Lovin' Lyin' Leavin'" from the same album.
The journey starts from the seed of my mind, long to find the consciousness divine
Like a vacuum lifts the dirt off my soul, eliminating circumstances beyond my control
I want to reach you, I want to reach you now!  My mind and body, together they know how
Rise, I will rise, before my senses return, like the smoke from the ritual fire that burns -- in your name.
There's a fire, and it's burning inside of me
Gatherin' strength with every bad thought I set free
There's a fire, yeah it's burning out of control
Smoke carries away the dirt off my soul.

This was the song that everybody remembered from LBDAS, following on the heels of Bradley's death and Sublime's dissolution.  They took a traditional Jamaican tune that Sublime had covered and put a unique stamp on it, letting millions of fans know that the spirit of Sublime wasn't dead just yet.
Every day I love her just a little bit more, a little bit more, a little bit more
Every day I love her just a little bit more and she loves me the same!
'cause my love is her love and her love is my love
Yeah she gives me lovin' at the right time, daytime and night-time
...So baby if you want to get low, baby if you want to get high
It makes no sense at all
I saw red, I saw red, I saw red --
And it's one more sacred lover that I shot dead...

Toad the Wet Sprocket -- "Little Heaven" (from the album In Light Syrup)
Genre:  Alternative
A lot of people dismissed this band as mediocre corporate alt, but if you did, you missed out on hidden gems like this one.
When we are not denying anything, nothing is an enemy
Delicately balancing perfect moments
Ride these waves of doubt, bitter in your mouth!
You will exhale, cinnamon clouds  [little heaven, little heaven]
Riding waves of doubt, touch me inside out
and I will exhale primal shout  [little heaven, little heaven]
I understand, the fire will come, not for the strength of will, or passion of anyone

not for the faithless ones ...

Genre:  Classic Rock
We all know this song has been played to death, entombed and buried in the Hall of Fame.  But if you're anywhere near my age group, the song permeated the air you breathed for the better part of two decades.  Your concept of "rock" wouldn't be anywhere near the same without it.
There's a feeling I get when I look to the west // And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees // And the voices of those who stand looking
and it makes me wonder...
And as we wind on down the road Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last When all is one and one is all, yeah
To be a rock and not to roll...

Ataris -- "Heaven is Falling" [cover Bad Religion] (from the album Rock Against Bush, vol. 1)
Genre:  Pop / Punk
Many people say that this Ataris version is kinda limp compared to the original Bad Religion version (written for the first Gulf War in 1991).  I think, although there's nothing wrong with the original, the tone of this cover version well expresses the feeling of helplessness, from 2003, when millions of us tried to prevent the Second Gulf War and were brushed aside.
As I walk beneath the valley, I shall fear no evil
For thanks to King George and his rainbow cabinet -- today murder is legal
God I know that it's wrong
To kill my brother for what he hasn't done

It sounds like heaven is falling...

The Who
the Who -- "3.905" (from the album Who Are You)
Genre:  Classic Rock
It still trips me out that The Who wrote science-fiction.  (What if you could have told The Who in 1971 that they would be playing the Superbowl in 2010?).  And it's good science-fiction; they capture the classic essence back when sci-fi was in its golden age.  The guitar intro sounding like an old Cinemascope mad scientist's computer opens the song beautifully.  As is the case for many of these bands, the Who wrote tons of addictive songs, so other people may disagree with my choice on this list.  But this is the one that sticks with me the most, mainly because of the lyrics.
Mother was an incubator, father was the contents
Of a test tube in the icebox in the factory of birth.
My name is Lionel-5, and I've just become alive,
I'm the newest populator of the planet called Earth.
In suspended animation, my childhood passed me by,
If I speak without emotion, then you know the reason why...
And everything I know is what I need to know,
Everything I do 'as been done before,
Every sentence in my head, someone else has said,
And each end of my life is an open door.
I have a feeling deep in side that something is missing,
It's a feeling in my
soul, and I can't help wishing
That one day I'll discover that we're living a lie
And I'll tell the whole world the reasons why.
But until then --
All I know is what I need to know,
Everything I do's been done before,
Every idea in my head, someone else has said,
And each end of my life is an open door.

Yes, there's a Rush song on my list, and yes, it's pretty high up on the list.  I know.
But Rush was a standout during a rather dry musical period for the English-speaking world back during the 80s.  And this lyric is not exactly original, but it's a nice execution.  Plus, nobody alive back then could get that introductory guitar riff out of their heads until after the first couple hundred times they heard it.
All the world's indeed a stage and we are merely players:
Performers and portrayers,
Each another's audience outside the gilded cage...

George Harrison -- "Any Road" (from the album Brainwashed)
Genre:  Classic Rock
This is one of the last songs George Harrison wrote before he died, and it's quite the gift he left for us.  That last lyric, the title of the song, is pretty much the story of my life.  I copped the audio off an interview he did for VH1, rather than the studio version, but both versions are nice in different ways.
I've been travelling on a boat and a plane, and a car and a bike and a bus and a train,
Travelling there, travelling here, everywhere, in every gear.
But Oh, Lord, you pay the price, with the spin of the wheel, with the roll of the dice,
Oh yeah, you pay your fare -- and if you don't know where you're goin', any road will take you there.

Genre:  Ska
The San Francisco Bay Area is proud of these native sons, currently sparking a comeback after a few years' hiatus.  The tune is one of the best examples of classic Ska that I know of -- catchy, precise, and peppy -- and the lyrics are effin' hilarious.  Everybody who hears this song performed live winds up muttering a few of the lyrics and chuckling to themselves for days afterwards.
So grind me in your factory, see everything you want to see
Shocking truths, exclusive photos, silicone tits and all my lovers...
People get off on one another, what they're doin' and where they're gonna...
Wait just a minute, I'll be right with you, I'm takin' care of business in my bathroom!
You're walking slowly, slyly, aiming for that section

Flavius -- "Affirming Your Heterosexual Self" (from the album Flavius Retrospective)
Genre:  Alternative
Another hardworking band from the old San Francisco circuit, Flavius (and other bands in its lineage, like Müllet and Wiggum) cranked out head-bangin metallic punk rock for years in undeserved obscurity.  I consider it my personal mission to make sure that songs like this one never die.
[Cheating again: the following lyric is a sample from a performance artist named Brother Theodore, which used to open the demo version of the Flavius song, but was edited out of the "official" version.  Most Flavius fans will recognize this snippet, though.]

This late-80s band was the soundtrack to a lot of late nights in the lab at college for me.  This particular song's echoing, moody loneliness manages to be uplifting rather than pained or dull, which is quite an achievement.
Follow her down to worship some God, who never speaks to me [I wonder if that's odd?]
[and then he says, "You're never listening"]
The pursuit of adulation is your butter and your bread.

Genre:  Folk
My friend Frank gave me this vinyl single, from an extremely obscure Santa Cruz band, once as a gift.  He said it was a joke and he expected the song to be hokey and silly (based on the cover art).  Instead, the B-side turned out to be one of the most incredibly addictive songs I've ever heard.  This song is like the "Naïve Art" of the American frontier.  Its sincerity and wry humor is absolutely perfect.
Well, you didn't want to leave me, but you kicked me out the door
You didn't want to hurt me, but you stomped me on the floor!
And you told me bring you flowers, but you burned them in a war,
Baby, please, let my spirit free!
Baby, please, rest awhile for me!

You told me, with my hair long, that I'd never get too far
And you told me I'm a burden if I didn't get a car!
And you told me that my music, it was never up to par,
Baby, please, smile a smile for me!
Baby, please, change your style for me!
...You told me let's have supper, didn't say you couldn't cook
You told me you were truthful if I didn't take a look!
You told me you got smarter 'cause you read a doctor's book...
Baby, please, try to play it cool!
Baby, please, find another fool!
Baby, please, don't try to make me drool!
Baby, please, start lookin' for a tool!

Something about this instrumental song just sets off my imagination.  It was originally written for the score of a ballet, but I could imagine it as the soundtrack to any kind of adventure, any of my real-life travels or any fantastical adventure in fiction...

Long Beach Shortbus
Long Beach Shortbus -- "Flying Ship of Fantasy" (from the album Flying Ship of Fantasy)
Genre:  Punk / Reggae
I 'fessed up to what my friends already know, in an earlier writing: obviously any song with the lyrics "We have no place in reality's realm" appeals to me.  This band, a member of the Sublime family of bands, took the best touches from punk and reggae, and combined them with progressive rock in the classic grandiose style.  The mix was something wonderful, and I was crestfallen when they decided to stop making music after a mere two albums.
Laughter called us up into the universal trance,
Embracing one another, and love will lead the dance
Angels cater to the whims, of anyone needing more
Dandelions 'round ice-cream fountains, lined up to the door...
We have no place in reality's realm,
On the flying ship of fantasy, we are Captains at the helm
No need for knowledge, the tree's already bare
Let's set our spirits free, vanish in the air
...in the air!

Play (popup)Alice in Chains
Alice in Chains -- "Got Me Wrong" (from the album SAP)
Genre:  Alternative
All of Alice in Chains' big hits were viciously addictive -- "I Stay Away", "No Excuses" -- but this slightly lesser-known song to me is the most addictive of all.  The eerie harmonies of their ensemble vocals really hook you, and their rhythms are almost primal in their simplicity.
I, can't let go, threadbare tapestry unwinding slow
Feel a tortured brain
Show your belly like you want me to...
You, sugar taste, sweetness doesn't often touch my face
Stay if you please
You may not be here when I leave...
As of now I bet you got me wrong!
So unsure, we reach for something strong...
I haven't felt like this in so long
Wrong, in a sense too far gone from love
Strong, I haven't felt like this in so long
Wrong, in a sense too far gone from love
That don't last forever --
Something's gotta turn out right...

U2 -- "Treasure [Whatever Happened to Pete the Chop?]" (from the album Rarities)
Genre:  Alternative

U2
You can stream-listen the entire song for free, but aparently only once per computer, here on this internet radio station.  You can listen more times if you sign up for the radio station.
Today it's hard to believe that U2 used to be legitimate, straight-up punks.  But listen to this song, [the full version], and you'll believe it.  There once was a time when Bono poured his bloody heart out at the top of his lungs, while the Edge ground his guitar and Larry beat those skins as fast as they possibly could.  That's punk.
Smile! Though your heart breaks in two
Touch me -- when will I be with you ?
I like good times, but I can feel it's going wrong
You sing the same old song, now I think it's time to get it right...
If I could swim, I'd swim in circles and I'd drown, I'd... I'd drown with you
If I had enough of my life, I can't tell
If I had enough of you...

Spook the Horse
Spook the Horse -- "New Year" (from the album Burn to Shine, vol. 5)
Genre:  Alternative
I will be sorely disappointed if this late-stage Seattle group has broken up before I even had any chance to see them, as I suspect they have.  Again I'm citing a live performance and linking to the studio version, but the studio version is great in its own right.  However this audio clip doesn't even try to capture the emotion of the 2'-30" guitar solo at the end of this song, which bears down on you like Time itself crushing a mountain and bares your whole life to the snowy wind.  No, I'm not smoking anything, you just gotta hear the solo.
With the wires and the mixes and the fixes we call in another new year,
Hey, it's just looking like the new year before.
When will I lose the shackles and these tangles that I tried and tried to ignore?
Hey, it's just looking like the new year before.
All this time we're wasting -- well -- these days are numbered...

Rancid -- "Time Bomb" (from the album ...And Out Come the Wolves)
Genre:  Punk

Rancid
Everybody who owned a radio ten years ago probably recognizes the chorus to this song, at least a little bit, and it still gets play.  Another beautiful example of the textbook Ska song: catchy and precise, measured, yet so much fun.
If you wanna make the move then you better come in
It's just the ability to reason that wears so thin
Livin' and dyin' and the stories that are true
Secret to a good life?  Is knowing when you're through...
Black coat, white shoes, black hat, Cadillac -- yeah --
The boy's a time bomb !

Sublime
Sublime -- "Trenchtown Rock" [cover Bob Marley] (from the album Sinsemilla Live 1996)
Genre:  Punk / Reggae
Again I feel bad that Bob Marley didn't personally make it onto my top 100 list, even though Bob & the Wailers wrote a lot of seriously addictive songs.
On the other hand, Bradley's solo here on this cover song takes Bob Marley's work into a whole new dimension.  His anguish as he sings this song really gives you an idea of the pain that music saved him from.
One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain...
One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain...
So hit me with music, hit me with music now.
Hit me with music, brutalize me with music... !

Remy Zero -- "Temenos [Here Come the Shakes]" (from the album Remy Zero)
Genre:  Alternative
You can stream-listen the entire song for free, but aparently only once per computer, here on this internet radio station.  You can listen more times if you sign up for the radio station.
You have to listen to the whole song to really get an inkling of its appeal to me, but there's this huge dissonant note in the chord progression that just stuns me.  Before hearing this song, I had no idea that sonic dissonance could be used to evoke such specific feelings -- this one contributes a disturbing feeling of tension to the song, rather than just grating.
Also note that Remy Zero did the theme song "Save Me" from the popular TV series "Smallville".  Another addictive song in its own right.
Hold my fingers up to the light, yeah,
And the light is strange, but I'm all right --
Strange, but it's all right...
It is a tri-colored field in my dream
And all the people lean into the sun all the time...
I try to find something,
I only found -- nothing !

Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Here's another quintessential Ska song from masters of the art.  The poetry of these lyrics is absolutely addicting.  We don't know what he actually said, but we know exactly how he feels about it.
So here's what happened this time, I'm sure that it's the last time,
I'm over going over it, it's over once again!
What am I gonna do with me, I blew the opportunity
By sayin' something asinine, I gotta watch this mouth of mine!

Nothin' nice to say, it's sticks and stones,
I blew it now and I'm all alone,
Let me take it back! I was only jokin',
My mouth is shut but my heart is broken...
I sure said the wrong thing right then!
[Try to forgive]
I'll never say that again
As long as I live !

Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters
Dave Grohl -- "Times Like These (Acoustic)" (from the [DVD] Low)
Genre:  Alternative
This song somehow reminds me of the Chinese curse about "May you live in interesting times".   And we certainly do, don't we -- which makes this song really hit me hard.  The 'pop' version on the actual album doesn't compare whatsoever to Dave's agonized delivery on this acoustic version.
I, I'm a new day rising, I'm a brand new sky to hang the stars upon tonight.
I, I'm a little divided; do I stay or run away, leave it all behind?
It's times like these, you learn to live again...
It's times like these, you give and give again!
It's times like these, you learn to love again...
It's times like these, time, and time again.

Trik-Turner
Several of the songs on this album are quite good, particularly if (like me) you are not actually a connoiseur of hip-hop music.  But this is the song that everybody remembers.  Because its lyrics have a lot of heart and fit the beat so well, without the beat becoming oppressive.  The song is gentle and sublime.
Some call me a loser, some call me a cheater, some say I'm a selfish untalented dreamer
Cause all I try to do is keep my dream alive, but it's so hard to do, when you're working 9 to 5...
...I will make it through all of the devious things that people do,
'Cause every moment counts from the good times to the bad, I don't have time to envy those that got things I've never had...
'Cause alls that I need is the air that I breathe and my friends and family to believe in me --
Deep as the abyss where the waters run, As deep as the land of the rising sun,
You know I'm down... and even when their minds are against us,
Doesn't even matter! Nothing else matters!
...Put your foot forward and there'll be a helping hand, you take a step back then you're stuck in the quick sand!
Ingesting toxins keeps us locked in, a mental jail trap [2000 where your family at??]

Oh and I might fail
Oh I might succeed
Whatever the outcome is...
Just keep your faith in me
Just believe in me...
And I will be there !

...aaaaaaaand, the #1 Most Addictive Song, out of 21,000 contestants...
...is from a band I don't even like all that much!
But I just gotta respect talent when I hear it.

Cake
Cake -- "Satan Is My Motor" (from the album Prolonging the Magic)
Genre:  Alternative
I got nothing against Cake, and I acknowledge it takes some real talent to rifle out so many songs with fantastical, nonsense lyrics that sound like they mean something.  Cake has got style, absolutely.  They're just not my favorite group, it's not my favorite style.  But this playful, happy rock tune here -- it lodges in your brain like a brick.  It's shockingly addictive, and that's what this list is measuring.  #1 most addictive song right here.
I've got wheels of polished steel, I've got tires that grab the road
I've got seats that selflessly hold my friends
And a trunk that can carry the heaviest of loads...
I've got a mind that can steer me to your house and a heart that can bring you red flowers,
My intentions are good, and earnest, and true, but under my hood is internal combustion power...
Satan is my motor
Hear my motor purr
'cause Satan is my motor, motor
Hear my motor purr
Satan is the only one who seems to understand...

Hope you enjoyed this Top 100 countdown of the most addictive songs in my collection.  No disrespect to the musicians who didn't make it into the double digits;  I listen to your songs all the time too.
