A Few Celtic-type Favorites

It's hard to explain my longstanding taste for Celtic-type music, to people who don't feel the same way. It's just got a lot of heart. The Irish were Punks for a thousand years before Punk actually arrived. Certainly there is some rote, trite, formulaic traditional Celtic music out there -- but the genre just seems so well amenable if the artist puts in the slightest effort to update it.

Once again here's a warning: Clicking one of the links below will take you to a page with one or more music clips on them. The file size of the music clip is about 500k (half a Megabyte). A telephone Internet connection might take 5 full minutes to load the 500k clip. Don't panic. But be ready to download some large files.

  • The Waterboys: How many times have you known that a friend was leaving, and known there was just nothing you could do about it? "When Ye Go Away"
  • The Alarm: They say 'No Man Is an Island,' but for those of us who come a bit close, this song is written about us. "The Rock"
