The Fryday Band

So many of the world's best bands started out as "My Best Friends"...

One of my criteria for separating good bands from bad ones, is that I have to believe they are having fun up on stage, at least most of the time, when they are playing. Now this band, I know, works hard at practice -- but the reason they are up there playing, is because they enjoy making music. They are, first, fun guys to hang around with (and yes, I know that from hanging around with them), and second, a band. That's how it oughtta be, and that's what comes through to me with this song.

"My Best Friends" by The Fryday Band

We met at Christmas because of our mothers,
Playing games and drawing comic-book covers,
Made a friendship strong and fitting,
It's like we were brothers from the beginning.

We've been through a lot together
Summers up North and school in the winter
Smokin' joints behind the garage
Going out to parties in mom's Caravan Dodge

Ya gotta play a role
We're given similar souls
[God gave us similar souls]
I'll be there 'til the end
['til the end]
That's what I say to my best friends.

Now we're all grown up
Out of college, work really sucks

[Oh yeah]
But I know we're still friends,
That's what I'll say to the very end

Ya gotta play a role
We're given similar souls

[God gave us similar souls]
I'll be there 'til the end
['til the end]
That's what I'll say to my best friends.
[To my best friends... my best friends.]
[To my best friends... my best friends.]

And now as we grow old
The phones grow so cold
But I know we're still friends
And I'm gonna love you 'til the very end

Ya gotta play a role
We're given similar souls
[God gave us similar souls]
I'll be there 'til the end
['til the end]
That's what I say to my best friends.
To my best friends... to my best friends.

That's one of The Fryday Band's oldest songs, here's a newer one that really tells a story:

"Skylines and Smiles" by The Fryday Band

So ya hitched a ride to Birmingham off of Interstate 65,
With a change of clothes, you hopped on down the line!
And on the ride the whole way down, you sang out to the skies,
"It's my life now, I got freedom by my side!"

Though you miss the things you had
Like a bedroom with a view,
And you know you miss you're mama's cookin', too,
And though your parents had said no
To the things you thought were cool,
You had to get out on your own,
There was nothing left to do --

Skylines and smiles made this town!
Early-morning breakfast wipes away our frowns,
Tattoo'ed on faces without any homes,
Nickels and dimes negotiate our thrones!

And now that you got what you want, you can sing out to the gods,
"It's my life now, I got freedom by my side!"
Just like all the dreams of old that flow within your soul,
They're yours to reap and they're yours to keep,
And they're just as
good as gold!

Skylines and smiles made this town!
Early-morning breakfast wipes away our frowns,
Tattoo'ed on faces without any homes,
Nickels and dimes negotiate our thrones!

Once I go under
With my drink,
It's another morning spent over the sink...
And another cup of coffee,
Is given out for free,
He's a nicer man, than I'll ever be!

Skylines and smiles
Paint this town,
Early-morning breakfast

Clears away our frowns,
Tattoo'ed on faces
W
ithout any homes,
And all those nickels and dimes
Negotiate our thrones !

Oh, just look at me
My little child,
Don't you run away, now,
Down the lonely mile,
I will stay with you,
To the end of my days,
Don't you look around, now,
Don't you run away!

'Cause you're my skyline,
And my smile,
Every day my child,
I will stay with you,
To the end of my days,
Don't you look around, now,
Don't you run away!

Skyline -- you're mine...!
