A Hip-Hop Favorite

Sorry to the hip-hop fans who clicked here, but I'm kind of a hip-hop wimp. The only groups I actually listen to repeatedly, which fall into this category, are tame white-boy type groups such as Trik-Turner (below) or the hip-hop efforts (mixed among the punk and reggae) offered by the Sublime family of bands.

Once again here's a warning: Clicking one of the links below will take you to a page with one or more music clips on them. The file size of the music clip is about 500k (half a Megabyte). A telephone Internet connection might take 5 full minutes to load the 500k clip. Don't panic. But be ready to download some large files.

  • Trik-Turner makes an artistic statement out of the simple act of hangin' with your "Friends and Family".

HONORABLE MENTIONS --
  • Planting Seeds, a local group out of Oakland, CA, snuck through my defenses by combining Hip-Hop with Reggae, a feat which I'm surprised isn't attempted more often. They have a lot of good, down-home lyrics as well. Like Trik-Turner, these guys are very tame compared to somebody like, for example, Public Enemy or Outkast. Some people might argue that the groups I like are 'watered down'. But in my case, their innovation succeeded where big-ticket phonies such as Vanilla Ice failed: to persuade a mainstream dude like me to give up my longstanding prejudice against the entire musical genre. Outkast may find his way onto my MP3 player later.
  • I can't talk about Hip-Hop lyrics without mentioning Sir Mix-A-Lot's classic "Baby Got Back"... but that's been so badly overplayed, I don't dare say anything further.
